Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Smart Modular Data Center and how does it differ from traditional data centers?
A smart modular data center integrates all subsystems—cabinets, power distribution, cooling, fire suppression, and environment monitoring—into one or two rows of cabinets. Traditional data centers involve on-site assembly of equipment from various manufacturers, requiring extensive engineering work and 3-6 month construction cycles with higher PUE. Modular data centers feature factory pre-fabrication and rapid on-site assembly, enabling delivery in 1-2 weeks. With contained aisles and in-row air conditioners, they achieve superior cooling efficiency and significantly reduce operational electricity costs.
How does aisle containment and in-row air conditioning provide value?
Traditional data centers use room-level cooling, similar to running home AC with all doors open, resulting in high electricity bills. Modular data centers employ precision cooling with in-row air conditioners placed directly beside servers for targeted cooling. Aisle containment completely separates cold intake air from hot exhaust air (via Cold Aisle Containment), ensuring 100% efficient airflow and reducing AC-specific electricity bills by 30-40%.
Should we recommend Cold Aisle Containment (CAC) or Hot Aisle Containment (HAC)?
Cold Aisle Containment (CAC) is most common, sealing the aisle between cabinet rows as the cold zone with in-row air conditioners blowing cold air directly into it. Advantages include low environmental requirements and comfort for personnel outside the module. Hot Aisle Containment (HAC) seals hot exhaust air and channels it back to AC units via ceiling or ducts. While theoretically more efficient due to warmer return air temperatures, HAC requires maintaining low temperatures throughout the entire room and specific ceiling heights, making it ideal for large-scale data centers.
Is the Dynamic Environment Monitoring System just an add-on in modular data centers?
The environment monitoring system serves as the "brain" of modular data centers, providing system-level orchestration and linkage. Unlike fragmented monitoring in traditional setups, it enables automatic responses such as releasing overhead roof panels during fire alarms to allow fire suppression gas entry while managing audio-visual alarms, mobile notifications, and PDU power monitoring—essential for unmanned data center safety.
